Friday | January 26 | 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. | Fast-A-Thon & Welcome Back Dinner
The Muslim Students Association at Syracuse University are kicking off 2018 with their annual Fast-A-Thon and welcome back dinner, Friday, January 26, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. at Hendricks Chapel on the Syracuse University campus.
Fasting in Islam, commonly tied to the obligatory Ramadan fasting, is designed to help Muslims develop self-discipline, a sense of sacrifice, and the characteristic of patience. Additionally, it reminds us of the pain and difficulty that people face when they have to go hungry because of the lack of food and opportunity. When people of different faiths, or of no faith volunteer to fast for one day on a predetermined date, everyone gets to practically learn about and share in developing these values, and we are reminded of the commonality in our very existence.
Fasting will begin at 6:00 am and end at 5:12 pm.
You do not have to be fasting to join us but we encourage everyone who is capable of fasting to do so. By avoiding food and drink from dawn-till-dusk, we will be “putting ourselves” in the shoes of those people who are less fortunate than us.
Feel free to share and invite others!
