The 12 months of the Islamic, or Hijri calendar follow a lunar cycle. A lunar month, as observed during Ramadan, may be 29 or 30 days depending on the time it takes for the moon to complete its four phases. The entire year consists of 354 or 355 days. “It is He who made the sun to be a shining glory and the moon to be a light (of beauty), and measured out stages for it: that ye might know the number of years and the count (of time). Allah (God) did not create this but in truth and righteousness.” [Yunus (Jonah): verse 5]
