When I decided to walk away from that lifestyle, I found myself facing many hardships. One of the most challenging was homelessness. I spent many nights sleeping under bridges, eating from garbage dumps, and looking for help from any reliable source I could find.”–  Alamin Abdullah Muhammad

Established in 2014 by Alamin Abdullah Muhammad, We Rise Above the Streets Recovery Outreach, Inc. was the realization of a dream to give back to the community from which he took in his early adulthood. His focused intent was to make sure the homeless, poor and under-represented in the community experienced genuine care. The mission of the organization is to offer a better way of life, encourage people to change their present condition and offer the resources to actualize a new beginning.

Alamin, having lived on the streets for a period of time in his life, knows the struggles intimately. “I know the life of gangs and homelessness and I can speak to it directly. I also know the issues that cause gangs and homelessness can be addressed so that lives can be changed. I know because it happened to me.”

During the five years, he was homeless, Alamin dedicated his life to his faith, held fast to a vow he made to stay sober, lead a crime-free life, complete his Associates Degree in Drug Counseling and ultimately found a nonprofit organization, to help people. He now serves the community by teaching life skills to those who struggle with addiction, feeding the poor and being an example for those who have issues with making positive life choices.

“And they are those who give food – in spite of their own need, to the needy, and the orphan,  and the captive, [saying in their hearts],’We only feed you for the sake of God, and we desire nothing in return from you, not even a word of thanks’’ – Al Insan 76:8-9

The We Rise Above the Streets Recovery Outreach call for support is time sensitive. A 2013 report by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)  found that approximately  600,000 people were homeless in the United States. Nearly one-quarter (23 percent or 138,149) of all homeless people were children, under the age of 18. Ten percent (or 61,541) were between the ages of 18 and 24, and 67 percent (or 410,352) were 25 years or older.

As temperatures begin to drop in Upstate New York; winter can be a testing time and leaves this population extremely vulnerable to the elements.  Due to extreme cold and exposure, many homeless people become susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia. Often isolated and with no support, these conditions can go unnoticed and untreated which can lead to serious complications and death.

Winter is the harshest time of year and the challenge to find adequate shelter, food and warm clothing, is daunting. This is where We Rise Above steps up & steps in by delivering a healthy meal, water, and personal hygiene products to help with cleanliness, an ear to listen or sometimes just a hug. To-date, with the help of many generous donors, they have been able to provide food for over 250 of the homeless in Onondaga County.
