It is highly recommended to fast the day of Arafah. Abu Hafsah (RAH), reported that the Prophet Mohammed (SAWS), said, Fasting on the Day of ‘Arafah absolves the sins for two years: the previous year and the coming year”
It was on Mount Arafah that Prophet Muhammed (SAWS) delivered his last speech. Those that have made Hajj pilgrimage will spend the whole day on Arafah supplicating to Allah (SWT) to forgive their sins and praying for personal strength in the future.

Muslims who are not participating in the annual Hajj, it is highly recommended that they spend the day fasting, in preparation for the three days festivity following Eid ul Adha. Eid ul Adha is a celebration marking the end of the Hajj and commemorating the Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) willingness of sacrifice.

It is reported the Prophet Muhammed’s wife Hafsah (RAAH), may Allah (SWT) be pleased with her, said: Four things the Messenger of Allâh never neglected: Observing fast on the day of’Ashura,  Arafah, three days every month, and offering fajr sunnah prayers early in the morning.  – Sahih Muslim
